Horse riding has been dropped from the modern pentathlon after the abuse seen at the Tokyo Olympics, where Germany’s coach punched a horse for refusing to jump a fence, drawing worldwide outrage.

A proposal to replace pentathlon horse riding was already under consideration and has now been unanimously endorsed. The change is expected to be implemented by the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The sport’s governing body, Union Internationale de Pentathlon (UIPM), has opened a consultation to find a suitable replacement activity – ADI urges UIPM to leave the animals out. Unwilling animal participants do not belong in aggressive human competitions. Show more
