Stripes greets his brother Max with a gentle head bump. The brothers are rarely seen apart despite living in the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary’s largest tiger territory, Kakato by April Fong Habitat.
Max and Stripes were rescued as cubs, along with their family, from a circus in Guatemala. They are truly the lucky ones, having grown up in an environment as close as possible to nature instead of a circus cage. Although generally solitary in the wild, in sanctuaries with plenty of space and no competition for food or mates, tigers like each others’ company.

Following a veterinary assessment they will be released into their larger habitats. Big boys Shujaa and Saham will be going into the main 4-acre Abbey Habitat – supporters will remember the happy years that Leo and Muñeca spent here under the trees and in the open grasslands. The four other lions are in our introduction habitat comprising of Kakato Home Sweet Home and Keith’s Happiness Habitat. This has a total of three houses, five feeding camps and two 1-acre sections and one half-acre section. Dhubiya, Saif, Aziza and Muheeb will be able to rotate through this, spending time next to each other, in each other’s space and we can see how they interact. Dhubiya and Saif are already very closely bonded and although Aziza has spent time with them, she doesn’t seem to have formed a bond and at this stage, seems to be really enjoying her own space. It is possible Aziza and Muheeb can form a pair, or we could have a magnificent pride of all four, or Aziza and Muheeb might just like their own space. We shall see over the coming months – it will be a slow process. For now we can’t wait to see all of the Kuwait 6 getting a bigger taste of Africa!
Please consider adopting one of the Kuwait 6 lions to help provide ongoing care:

The South Africa CITES import permit for all six lions has been issued and Qatar Airways Cargo has provisionally given us a free flight (as part of WeQare program) for Sunday, May 19. Once we have veterinary permits and finalised export procedures, the lions should arrive at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary on May 20.
The Kuwait 6 (Muheeb, Saif, Dhubiya, Aziza, Shujaa and Saham) were rescued from the illegal wildlife pet trade after being either abandoned, surrendered, or confiscated and are being cared for by volunteers and staff at Kuwait Zoo.
With your help we will transform the lives of these animals and strike a blow against the cruel and illegal wildlife trade, fuelled by people seeking a status symbol – doomed for an unnatural life of isolation on a chain or caged in a basement, just so that someone can show them off as if they were a new watch, or a car.
As these animals grow, they become too strong and expensive to feed, or the owner just becomes bored of the novelty and doesn’t want to care for a being who may live for 20 years. So, they are often abandoned. There are reports of lions being dumped in the desert to starve and lion cubs released on the streets of Kuwait City (as some of these were).
DON’T FORGET – these precious lions need your support – they are young, and each could enjoy 20 years at ADIWS!

Victims of the illegal pet trade, the lions were either seized, captured after being dumped, or voluntarily surrendered. The five lions are in the custody of the closed Kuwait Zoo where they have been cared for until a home could be found. Will you help bring 10 month old Saif (male), Dhubiya (female), 18 month old Saham (male), Shujaa (male), and 4 year old Muheeb to the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary and give them the best possible life for many years to come? We are currently looking at options for flights and for travel crates but urgently need your help raising the funds towards caring for these animals for life. These are young lions with their whole lives ahead of them. Please give what you can today:

The spectacled bear was rescued in 2017 by ADI from a remote zoo in Peru. Taken from the wild as cubs, when her sister passed away Dominga was left all alone. She lost almost all of her fur due to stress. Five years ago ADI took Dominga home to a specially built habitat in the Peruvian forest at Taricaya Ecological Reserve. Her fur didn’t grow back but she has thrived and has two other bears, Cholita and Sabina, as neighbours. If Dominga looks completely relaxed and at home here, it’s because she is home.
